Cycle Day 4 : Siuri to Pendolo

We beat the road works with an early start and were just clearing the rough bits as the earth moving equipment guys were gearing up. Today's ride profile put me in mind of the Monty Python's "Anne Elk's Theory on Brontosauruses" sketch: "...brontosauruses are thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle and then thin again at the far end.'  Not bad for riding on a hot day.

The Balinese residences we pass appear to suggest a greater affluence with walled yards, family shrines, flowering shrubs lining the property. One feature that stands out are the ornate bird houses - little temples in their own right. Some are pedestal mounted and others pole hung. They put me in mind of something I came across in Toronto this past summer while re-exploring the upper Humber bike trail. Saturday mornings a group of Hindu (I assume) men gather and hang up bird cages on posts that the city has installed and hang out...wasn't sure what they were up to at the time. I asked Alex about these cages and he tells me that song bird keeping and competing are popular - more so in Java and Bali. Cages are hung spaces about a meter apart and owners coax their birds through various songs for the judging panel.

Had a terrific view at the tea break.

Took van up a through a construction zone and didn't catch up to my bike till the bottom of the "thick" middle. The "thin" part of the ride to our next stop was searing. Fortunately we were done by lunch and had some colourful lake front cottages along a big stretch of sandy beach to relax by. Water verged on chilly!  :-)
